What is a futurist?

A futurist is someone who studies and predicts future trends and developments, primarily on the basis of current technological, social and scientific advances. This includes analyzing existing data, patterns and trends to predict possible future scenarios. Futurists often work in various fields such as engineering, economics, sociology and environmental sciences and provide insights into how changes in these areas could affect the future.

What is my role as futurist?

I have always been at the forefront of technology and my brain is constantly trying to understand the connection between opportunities and their impact.

As a futurist focused on emerging technologies and their long-term impact on society, science, policies, governments and especially businesses and the economy, my work revolves around exploring and interpreting the enormous potential of new innovations.

I examine how technological advances can reshape industries, influence societal norms and drive scientific breakthroughs. My approach combines in-depth research with a keen understanding of socio-economic dynamics but what makes me successful and unique is my own innovation drive, combining existing technologies and seeing future possibilities which others dont see. This allows me to provide a comprehensive insight into how technology could influence future business strategies, policy decisions, societal structures and scientific research. This holistic perspective is crucial for companies and individuals who want to adapt and succeed in an ever-evolving technological landscape.

Who needs a futurist?

In today’s rapidly evolving world, many people and organizations need the insights of a futurist. Businesses looking to stay ahead of market trends, governments developing strategies and policies for a changing societal landscape, educational institutions preparing students for future careers, and non-profit organizations looking to address new challenges all benefit from a futurist’s perspective.

Essentially, anyone facing the complex task of planning for the future in an environment of constant technological advancement and societal change can gain valuable insight from a futurist. This includes entrepreneurs, investors, policy makers and thought leaders who must navigate through uncertainties and opportunities to make informed, strategic decisions that will shape the years and decades ahead. This is also why I give workshops on many topics, why my keynotes on futurism are in high demand, and why I serve as a technology expert and futurist in several governments, organizations and ministries around the world.

“In a world in constant flux, understanding the future isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.”

What makes me different as a futurist?

What sets me apart as a futurist is my unique blend of practical entrepreneurial experience and extensive involvement in various groups and forums, coupled with a deep academic understanding. Unlike many futurists who primarily have an academic background, I bring the dynamic mindset of an entrepreneur. This perspective allows me to see innovation beyond the conventional and recognize opportunities that would elude a more traditional academic approach. My insights are not just theoretical, but based on practical experience of building start-ups and navigating the complexities of different business environments.

My unique approach as a futurist is also defined by the way I process and synthesize information. I think differently and consider a wide range of variables and possible outcomes, which allows me to have a nuanced and comprehensive foresight. This skill has proven itself time and time again in my work as an advisor to dozens of governments, ministries and global organizations. It’s about looking beyond the obvious, grasping complexity and using that understanding to develop truly innovative solutions and strategies. My intuition for future trends and innovation, coupled with a fast-paced, fact-based style of discussion, sets me apart from others who struggle to consider the many variables that shape our future. My approach is not just about predicting the future, but actively shaping it with insightful, impactful and forward-thinking strategies.

FAQ about Keynotes

Frequently Asked

Here you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about my work as a futurist. Here, I aim to clarify how futurist insights can be integral to understanding and preparing for the future, and how my expertise might align with your organization’s needs and objectives.

+ How do you predict future trends in technology?

I analyze current technological advances, market trends and societal changes and combine this data with my experience as an entrepreneur and consultant. My specialty is also to use my innovative thinking to combine these trends and expect possible future technologies. This allows me to make informed predictions about how these technologies will develop and impact different sectors.

+ What role does a futurist play in economic development?

As a futurist, I recognize emerging economic trends and potential growth opportunities created by technological innovation. My insights help companies and governments to develop strategies for sustainable economic development in an increasingly digital world.

+ How accurate are your future predictions?

While no futurist can predict the future with 100% accuracy, my predictions are based on in-depth research, analysis, and a solid understanding of current trends and historical patterns. It is important to know that as futurists we are always talking about probabilities and probable futures and not a definitive path or road to the future where every step is predictable.

+ Can you tailor your futurist presentations to our specific industry or company?

Definitely – in fact, most of my work is not just a presentation. I adapt my work and also the presentations and keynotes to the particular challenges and opportunities that are being discussed. That’s why my work as a futurist is very different from giving a keynote, advising companies or sitting in ministries or governments. The biggest challenge is always to ensure that the content is relevant and directly applicable to the particular context.

+ How do you stay updated with the latest trends and developments?

My main work is “learning” and connecting the dots. I constantly keep up with the latest research, read extensively every day, have my own learning methodology, attend conferences and work with experts from different fields. This constant learning and networking keeps my insights current and relevant.

Understand the differences between foresight, strategic foresight and futurology.

Futurism, future studies, strategic foresight, Futures studies, futures research, and futurology – though often used interchangeably, each of these disciplines has its nuances, yet they are all interconnected in their exploration of the future.

Despite their differences, these disciplines are united by a common goal: understanding potential futures to better prepare for them. They all acknowledge the complexity and uncertainty of the future, using various tools and approaches to explore and interpret the possible, probable, and preferable futures. In my work as a futurist, I draw on aspects of all these fields, employing a blend of visionary thinking, systematic study, strategic analysis, and empirical research to provide comprehensive insights into the future and its myriad possibilities.

Futurism primarily started as an artistic and social movement but has evolved to encompass the study and prediction of future trends, particularly in technology and society. It often involves a visionary perspective on how current innovations can shape future lifestyles and landscapes.

Future Studies and Futures Studies are academic fields that systematically explore predictions and possibilities about the future. They involve interdisciplinary research and are more methodological in nature, focusing on trends, scenarios, and potential changes over time.

Strategic Foresight is a practical application often used in business and organizational contexts. It’s about anticipating future developments to inform strategic planning, decision-making, and policy development. It combines elements of future studies with management science.

Futures Research involves rigorous investigation into long-term trends and scenarios, often employing quantitative data and models. It’s more empirical and is oriented towards providing a grounded understanding of what future scenarios might unfold.

Futurology, often used synonymously with futures studies, is the systematic and interdisciplinary study of the future. It’s more academic and theoretical, encompassing a range of methodologies to explore what future might emerge.
